Congressman Jackson, Aunt Martha’s announce plans for pediatric center in Chicago Heights. Olympia Fields-based nonprofit receives $11.8 million in federal stimulus funding.
CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL – U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-2nd) and State Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) joined representatives from Aunt Martha‟s Youth Service Center on Thursday to announce the Olympia Fields-based nonprofit organization‟s plans to build a $5.9 million Pediatric Health and Community Wellness Center in south suburban Chicago Heights.
“I believe that every American is entitled, as a birthright, to high quality health care. Nonetheless, too many people are falling through the cracks and not receiving the care they need and deserve,” Jackson said. “Since 1972, Aunt Martha‟s has demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency in identifying these service gaps, implementing programs to fill them, and serving as a last line of defense‟ for the least among us who otherwise would go uncared for.”
According to Raul Garza, Aunt Martha‟s Chief Executive Officer, the preliminary plans for the pediatric center call for a 20,000 sq. ft. facility that will house: pediatric medical, dental and behavioral health services; a Wellness Center with a fitness room; a pediatric play area; case management offices and office space for the agency‟s health care administrative staff.
Garza credited Jackson for his efforts to secure the funding for Aunt Martha‟s and the medically underserved residents of Chicago Heights and its neighboring communities.
“It was your leadership, your conviction and your dedication to your constituents that tilted this battle in our favor,” Garza said. “On behalf of Aunt Martha‟s Board of Directors, our staff and the thousands of people we serve in Illinois‟ 2nd District, I thank you for your continued support and commitment to our cause.”
The project – including construction and the health center‟s on-going operation – is expected to create the equivalent of more than 29 full-time jobs; and Aunt Martha‟s expects to serve more than 9,400 patients in the center‟s first year of operation.
Garza discussed the pediatric center in the context of his organization‟s vision, in which “the patient sits at the center of an integrated spectrum of health care and social services.”
“It is a vision that represents community health centers not as they are elsewhere, but the as they could be everywhere, and as they will soon be in Chicago Heights,” said Garza.
Aunt Martha‟s plans to begin building the new facility, which will be located on a site adjacent to its Women‟s Health Center on Joe Orr Road, later this summer. It is targeted to open in the fall of 2011.
The pediatric center is one of two projects funded by the $11.8 million grant received by Aunt Martha‟s under the Facility Investment Program of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009.
