Nuestra Gente Fecha de publicación: 11/08/2010 HENRY HANK MARTINEZ: 50 años con la comunidad hispana / 50 YEARS WITH THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY Después de 50 arduos años de trabajo incansable por lograr mejores condiciones para la niñez y juventud hispana, el hoy presidente de la Comisión para la Familia Hispana se niega a decir tarea cumplida y continúa trabajando. ENGLISH VERSION BELOW POR EDUARDO ALEGRIA En los años 20, uno de los mayores cambios que vivió Chicago fue la composición de su población. En la zona sureste de la ciudad dejaron de llegar los inmigrantes euro- peos debido a la Primera Guerra Mundial y en su lugar sus calles se empezaron a poblar de mexicanos, que sumados a los afroamericanos, desplazaron a la comunidad anglosajona a otras áreas. Acostumbrados a vivir en comunidad, los mexicanos muy pronto se organizaron y empezaron a levantar instituciones; la primera de ellas fue convertir a la iglesia Nuestra Se- ñora de Guadalupe, ubicada en la Calle 91, en su casa espiritual y punto de reunión social. A los pocos años, al final de los años 30’, un grupo de ellos fundó el Mexican Patriotic Club y funcionaba en los salones de la iglesia, hasta que en 1974 inauguraron su propio local. Su actividad principal era festejar la Fiesta de Independencia Mexicana. Con el paso del tiempo se dieron cuenta que esta organización no podía velar por sus intereses, y fue así que se sumaron al entusiasmo de Henry “Hank” Martínez quien en 1959 fundó el Mexican Community Commitee, con el principal propósito de reducir la delincuencia y proveer servicios sociales a la comunidad hispana como capacitación para la salud, asesoría familiar y legal, programas de recreación familiar, deportes, expresiones culturales, entre otras actividades. Han pasado más de 50 años y “Hank” Martínez sigue involucrado en lograr mejoras para la niñez y la juventud. En 2007, el Gobernador de Illinois creó la Comisión para la Familia Hispana con el objetivo de proponer mejoras en la legislación que ayude a las instituciones a combatir la violencia de las calles... y Martínez fue designado como su primer presidente. “Fue un honor para mí y un agradecimiento por reconocer mi trabajo”, dijo a UNBUENDOCTOR. La gente lo identifica como un líder y un activista defensor de los hispanos, pero él se niega a verse de esa forma. “Yo nunca comencé a trabajar para ser un activista, nunca fue mi intención, y yo no me considero un activista, ni organizador de luchas, porque nunca fui ni Boy Scout; yo sólo realicé trabajos para solucionar problemas de los jóvenes y eso me fue llevando a una vida de ayuda a la gente. Si eso me convierte en activista, pues soy activista, pero yo no me considero un activista, ni mucho menos un político. Yo comencé en esto a los 22 años más o menos y desde entonces no he parado”, dijo. “Es más”, agregó. “Yo no pedí ni quise tener este tipo de trabajo, por los años 60’ empecé a involucrarme porque mi padre participaba en actividades con la comunidad y yo estaba viendo lo que les pasaba a los jóvenes que eran absorbidos por las pandillas. No sabía que iba a trabajar como trabajador social. Un día una persona que influyó en mí, me dijo ‘por qué no me ayudas a trabajar con los muchachos porque tienes carácter para eso’; y me dije: ‘porque no’, y comencé a ayudar en crear programas para ayudar a los jóvenes hispanos a alejarse de las pandillas y el consumo de drogas. Esos han sido casi siempre los temas que han ocupado mi tiempo y energía en todos estos años. Organizar a la comunidad para combatir estos males ha estado orientado mi trabajo con la comunidad latina”. Su héroe siempre fue el activista César Chávez por su entrega en defensa de los más necesitados, él fue su inspiración y trató de seguir su ejemplo organizando a la comunidad. “Con el paso del tiempo me he dado cuenta que más importante que organizar actividades era trabajar en las cosas que delinean las políticas y la distribución de los fondos a favor de programas que beneficien a niños y jóvenes hispanos. No me importa si me pagan bien o mal las personas a quienes ayudo, lo hago porque considero que es mi trabajo y porque quiero a mi comunidad”, afirmó. Martínez sabe, como un hombre que ha crecido en el sur de Chicago en tiempos muy difíciles para los jóvenes hispanos, que la violencia en las calles no va a acabar del todo, ni que van a desaparecer las pandillas. “Pero se puede lograr una reducción drástica si se pone especial énfasis en atacar el problema de fondo que es fortalecer la estructura familiar creando mejores oportunidades de desarrollo a los niños, para que cuando lleguen a jóvenes no les interese las pandillas. Y esa es una tarea no sólo de los políticos”, sostuvo. Reiteró que después de 50 años de luchas constantes, todavía hay mucho por hacer, “y por eso no me pienso retirar. No creo que haya hecho una gran obra, sólo creo que he hecho mi trabajo, para lo que me preparé y porque pienso que es mi responsabilidad, no pienso ser un líder, ni político. Me da gusto eso sí que muchas autoridades hayan reconocido mis esfuerzos a lo largo de estos años”, concluyó Martínez, el reconocido líder que sigue siendo el director ejecutivo del Mexican Community Commitee, del cual es fundador; así como director del Instituto de Recursos Latinos en Illinois, que él creó; supervisor superior del Chicago Area Projecty; además de presidente de la Comisión Para La Familia Latina del Estado de Illinois. ENGLISH VERSION Henry “Hank” Martínez: 50 Years with the Hispanic Community BY EDUARDO ALEGRIA After 50 arduous years of tireless effort to achieve better conditions for Hispanic children and youth, the current chairman of the Latino Family Commission refuses to say the task is done and continues on. During the 20’s, one of the biggest changes Chicago experienced was the composition of its population. In the southeast side, European immigrants stopped arriving because of World War I and instead the streets began to populate with Mexicans, which added to African Americans, displaced the Anglo community to other areas. Accustomed to living in community, Mexicans would soon be organized and began establishing institutions; the first of these was to convert the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located on 91st St., into their spiritual home and social venue. A few years later, in the late 30’s, a group of them founded the Mexican Patriotic Club and worked in the halls of the church, until 1974 they opened their own location. Its main activity was to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Over time, they realized that this organization could not look after their interests, and that is how they joined the enthusiasm of Henry “Hank” Martinez, who in 1959 founded the Mexican Community Committee, with the main purpose of reducing crime and providing social services to the Hispanic community such as training for health, legal and family counseling, family recreation programs, sports, cultural expressions, among other activities. It has been more than 50 years and “Hank” Martinez continues to be involved in making improvements for children and youth. If that makes me an activist, then I am an activist, but I do not con- sider myself an activist, let alone a politician. I started at around 22 years of age or so and since then I have not stopped, “he said. “Moreover,” he added. “I did not ask for nor wanted to have this kind of work; by the 60’s I started to get involved because my father was involved in community activities and I was seeing what happened to the young people who were absorbed by the gangs. I did not know I would work as a social worker. One day a person who influenced me, said ‘why do you not help me work with the youngsters, you have the character for it,’ and I said, ‘why not’, and began to help create programs to help Hispanic youth stay away from gangs and drugs. These have almost always been issues that have occupied my time and energy during all these years. Organizing the community to combat these evils has guided my work with the Latino community. “ His hero was always the activist Cesar Chavez for his dedication in defense of the needy; he was his inspiration and tried to follow his example by organizing the community. “Over time I realized that more important than organizing activities was to work on things that outline the policies and the allocation of funds for programs that benefit Hispanic youth and children.
